Every fall, as we approach the calendar date of November 4, I am drawn into remembering the history of the Messianic Jewish Bible Institute. It was on that date in 1996 that Dr. Wayne & Bonnie Wilks, along with Valentin and Tatyana Sviontek, officially launched the MJBI in Odessa, Ukraine.

I will always count them as some of my greatest personal heroes for making this great sacrifice.

Both couples moved all their belongings and their children to the former Soviet Union just in time for winter. Fall is one of the best times to live in Texas, so why on earth would they be willing to leave everything behind and move to such a debilitated part of the world and pioneer such a unique work? Because they believed strongly in the vision and mission of MJBI, which was carefully crafted through years of prayer, counsel, and the wisdom of wise leaders.

Leaders such as Pastor Olen Griffing, who serves beside James Robinson and Jack Hayford as one of three Apostolic Elders at Gateway Church. Or Rabbi Jonathan Bernis, who is still the Chairman of the MJBI Board of Directors 22 years later. Pastor Robert Morris, founder and lead pastor of Gateway Church, helped send Wayne and Bonnie out in 1996 as a fellow elder at Shady Grove Church. Then there is Dr. Dan Juster, one of the foremost scholars on modern Messianic theology and teaching, now living with his family in Jerusalem. And, of course, Rabbi Marty Waldman, who grew Baruch HaShem Messianic Synagogue in Dallas into one of the largest and most influential Messianic congregations in the world.

Each of these wonderful brothers recognized what God was doing on the earth and commissioned the Wilks, Svionteks, and MJBI as an organization to respond. The vision and mission they established in 1996 continue to this day, and it is important that we are all reminded of it from time to time.

So, what is the vision of the MJBI? To see every Jewish person come to faith in Yeshua (Jesus) as their Messiah, knowing that their acceptance will bring a “life from the dead” revival among the nations. This is directly from Romans 11:15. We believe that God deeply loves His covenant people, and our heart is to see every single Jewish person on earth experience the wonderful love of the true Messiah of Israel, Yeshua.

What do we do to see this monumental vision become a reality? We equip leaders to reach Jewish people with this Gospel message. We do this in numerous countries around the world and through a variety of different methods: college – level seminary programs, one – year classroom programs, an online school, events and seminars, monthly newsletters, magazines, and our website resources.

Since neither Wayne nor I are Jewish, we realize that it is not just Jewish believers in Yeshua who will be called to serve the Jewish people. Today, God is placing this exciting and consecrated calling on Gentiles around the world as well. This is a fulfillment of our roles as Gentiles to “provoke Israel to envy” (Romans 11:11), that they might see the beauty and joy of following the Jewish Messiah, Yeshua.

When you financially support the MJBI, this is the vision and mission that you are supporting and have been since 1996. Along with the Apostle Paul, we do believe that all Israel will be saved (Romans 11:26). It is our commitment to respond to God’s call to humbly love, serve, and minister to the Jewish people wherever He leads us.

I will personally share even more exciting updates about this 22-year-old vision and mission at our 2018 Banquet, Before Our Eyes: Jerusalem Redeemed. And you will not want to miss hearing valuable insights on Israel from our special guest, former Prime Minister Stephen Harper! If you have not already done so, I encourage you to register to host a table or to buy individual tickets to attend the event. We are running out of available space quickly, so please make sure you reserve your spot ASAP.
