1.  THE FORMER RAINS  “For after seven more days, I will cause it to rain on the earth…” (Genesis 7:4).    On Thursday it finally rained in Israel.  There was flooding in the Negev to the south; in Jerusalem it showered, clarifying the atmosphere from the dust which had been sitting over us for several days.  This came three days after Shemini Atzeret (the eighth day of Sukkot), when observant Jews

1.  CHOICES AT THE U.N. On the 13th of October, UNESCO  (“United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization”)  gave preliminary approval to a resolution effectively ignoring any ties between the Temple Mount and Judaism.  24 nations voted in favor, 26 abstained, and only six voted against the resolution.  Those six were the United States, Great Britain, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Germany and Estonia.   The Mount, with the adjacent Western (“Wailing”) Wall

Israel Prayer Update, September 26, 2016

OUR PRIME MINISTER IN THE U.S  Prime Minister Netanyahu has wrapped up his trip to the U.S.  Yesterday he met with Presidential candidates Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.  Earlier in the week, after much uncertainty as to whether it would take place, he did in fact have a short meeting with President Obama.  It seems to have been relatively cordial (pundits suggest that with the Florida primaries looming, a strongly contentious confrontation with Israel might have had a negative effect on the Clinton campaign (which the President strongly supports) there.   And on Thursday evening, Netanyahu once again addressed the UN General Assembly.  We have chosen to present the entire speech in this Update  (making it a bit longer than usual).  Not because we are in agreement with all the views

1.  EID al-ADHA  Last Monday marked the holiest holiday in the Muslim calendar, Eid al-Adha—the “Feast of the Sacrifice.”  On this day, Muslims around the world celebrate the Sacrifice of Abraham’s son, Ishmael.  We wrote of this during the closing days of Ramadan, how their religion teaches that Abraham (Ibrahim) was commanded by Allah to go with his wife Hagar and son Ishmael to a place near Mecca in the Arabian Peninsula.  There (and there are several somewhat differing accounts of the particulars) Allah tested Abraham, commanding him to offer Ishmael as a sacrifice.  When he hesitated, Ishmael his son encouraged him to obey Allah rather than his emotions.  Then Abraham collected himself, took his knife and cut his sons throat; Ishmael fell to the ground.  But when he looked

PRAYER UPDATE FROM ISRAEL– SEPTEMBER 12, 2016   The squills are blossoming on Givat haTanakh (Bible Hill), across from the Mount Zion hotel off of Hebron Road in Jerusalem.  Their awakening is seen as a harbinger of Autumn—and, we pray, a season of abundant “former rains!” 1.  “ETHNIC CLEANSING” BY ANY OTHER NAME  On September 20th, Prime Minister Netanyahu will be arriving in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, which he is expected to address on Thursday the 22nd.  As of this week, there appears to be no high-level meeting with American President Obama scheduled while he is there.  It is conjectured that factors contributing to make such a meeting improbable include Netanyahu’s seeming openness this past week to the possibility of meeting with Palestinian President Abbas in Moscow
