PRAYER UPDATE FROM ISRAEL JULY 5, 2016   A heart-shaped field on Mount Zion across from the writers’ balcony. ¾ of the field has been scorched with fire since the beginning of Ramadan.   It was with deep emotion that we received the news of the death Saturday of Elie Wiesel.  For us, his book “Night”—an account of his boyhood experience in Auschwitz—stands as a necessary doorway through which we were

PRAYER UPDATE FROM ISRAEL  JUNE 13, 2016 Last Wednesday night an Islamist terror attack took place in Tel Aviv’s busy Sarona market area. Two Palestinians, who, all dressed in suits and ties, might have been lawyers dropping by for supper, calmly entered a restaurant, had their meal, then drew forth from their bags automatic weapons and began shooting.  Security camera footage released to the media showed a wave of terrified people fleeing through the restaurant; another video showed an Israeli police officer leveling and firing his pistol at one of the terrorists.  Public awareness of the attack, which at the time made international headlines, has now receded in light of the horrific massacre occurring Saturday night in an LGBT bar in Orlando.  Also carried out by an avowed Islamist, it left

Western Wall (Kotel) Plaza at dusk, Jerusalem Day, 2016 (6-5-16) 1.  49 YEARS—BUT NOT YET WHOLE  Yesterday the 28th of the Hebrew month Iyyar marked 49 years since Israeli troops stormed through the Lion Gate of the Old City, and shortly thereafter came the cry in Hebrew over the wireless, “The Temple Mount is in our hands!”   It was the first time in almost 2600 years that Israel could actually claim to have sovereignty over the Mountain where her Temple to YHVH had once stood.  It also marked the first time in almost 20 years that Jews had been even able to pray at the Wall which had once encircled that site.  In those miraculous six days of June 1967, the entire city of Jerusalem came into Israeli hands—as

1. PRAY FOR ISRAEL’S GOVERNMENT. On Monday Avigdor Liberman was approved by the Israeli government as Israel’s new Minister of Defense. He will be sworn in later this evening. This comes after a tense week regarding his appointment in which the Jewish Home party led by Naphtali Bennett threatened to bring down the government. Bennet was demanding the setting up of a military secretary who would regularly brief the security cabinet, of which he is a member. Without such a briefing, it seemed possible that the Prime Minister and Defense Minister might have power to control what information was allowed to the rest of the security cabinet, thus making it possible to circumvent them on important decisions. In the end, Netanyahu acquiesced and the crisis was averted. Meanwhile, there has
