1.  THE FORMER RAINS  “For after seven more days, I will cause it to rain on the earth…” (Genesis 7:4).    On Thursday it finally rained in Israel.  There was flooding in the Negev to the south; in Jerusalem it showered, clarifying the atmosphere from the dust which had been sitting over us for several days.  This came three days after Shemini Atzeret (the eighth day of Sukkot), when observant Jews

1.  CHOICES AT THE U.N. On the 13th of October, UNESCO  (“United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization”)  gave preliminary approval to a resolution effectively ignoring any ties between the Temple Mount and Judaism.  24 nations voted in favor, 26 abstained, and only six voted against the resolution.  Those six were the United States, Great Britain, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Germany and Estonia.   The Mount, with the adjacent Western (“Wailing”) Wall in Jerusalem is considered by both Jews and Christians to be the holiest place on earth—the place where the two Temples stood, and the place where Messiah will one day reign (Psalm 2).  Yet, in the resolution the Mountain was referred to only by its Muslim Arabic name al-Haram al-Sharif. Under the title “Occupied Palestine,” it had been sponsored by

THE FEAST OF TRUMPETS—ROSH HASHANAH  5777 יום תרועה/ראש השנה תשע”ז     “Speak to the children of Israel, saying:  ‘In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall have a sabbath, a memorial of blowing [of shofars–rams’ horns], a holy convocation.  You shall do no customary work; and you shall offer an offering made by fire to the LORD’” (Leviticus 23:23-25; see also Numbers 29:1-6). Monday October 3rd will mark the beginning of the Biblical Fall Feasts—Yom T’ruah, the Day of Blowing (of shofars)—the Feast of Trumpets.  After the Captivity in Babylon, it came also to be known as Rosh Hashanah, the “Head of the [civil] Year”.  Although Hebrew months are numbered beginning in the Spring (Exodus 12:2), the numbering for the Hebrew year changes on
